Finally having a Duo with Ryan. Been a while. He brought this back from Back Pew Brewing, where he had it on tap and loved it. Heavy like syrup on the pour. Strong malt aroma. Heavy and creamy texture. Flavor first brings a sweet molasses which is quickly followed by a heavy dark fruit, probably raisin. It then surrenders to a heavily charred double roasted malt. This char overwhelms and covers the previous flavors. As it travels into the finish, the char recedes somewhat giving into a deep roasted coffee with undertones of cocoa powder. I enjoyed the complexity of the flavors taking turns but the lack of any effervescence and the 13 and 1/2% not participating in the experience left me unimpressed. Still good but not great.

Another fine 750 ml Belgian strong ale that Ryan found in Texas. Sure do miss my stouts. Poured with almost no head whatsoever. Deep reddish brown hazy color. Sour wine aroma. Never mind the texture, the flavor is not good. Sour wine, apricot on the spoiled side. Reminds me of orange juice that's on the verge of going bad. Maybe something went wrong with this one but I can't finish it.

Had this beer on tap at Back Pew Brewery in Houston a year and a half ago with my son-in-law. I'll have to admit that it was our third brewery and he had me half baked by then. This is from a can that is probably past its prime. Wow! Out of the can that head was insane. Still waiting for it to go down to finish pouring. Now it's out of the glass completely. Finally, the aroma has sweet straw. Very soft texture. Low effervescence probably because of the head. Mild amount of flavor dominated by clove and banana. No bitterness and not sweet either. Finish turns dry and is gone. Now on my third pour into the glass, since the other two kept the head so high, it has gone over the top of the glass onto my tray. Crazy carbonation. I agree with my previous review that is very drinkable. However, the flavor is very forgettable, except for the overflowing frothy heads.

Hot day in Houston having a good local brewery imperial IPA. Light yellow color but totally hazy. Strong citrus aroma. Flavor is predominantly orange peel. Very modest level of bitterness which enables me to enjoy this beer more. Appreciate the trend of IPAs to tone it down to widen their market. Very smooth and enjoyable finish. Excellent.

With my son-in-law at back pure brewing have our six beer on a flight of six. High point Frosty Head. Hazy with a medium yellow color. Has a sour and banana aroma. Flavor reminds me of a Belgian ale with a strong clove and banana flavor. Light and crisp, this is a very drinkable beer. Not overpowering so makes it easier to have several.

At Back Pew Brewing with my son in law trying our fourth beer on a flight of six. This place is great. You should visit this if you are in the area. Almost no head. Opaque brown color. Aroma is a roasted malt. Flavor is strong, deeply roasted with a charred bitterness. Finish has a subdued earthy flavor and the bitterness trails off. For the category of brown ale, I think they did a very good job.

With my son-in-law at Back Pew Brewing. Beer three on a flight of six. Small tan head, totally black in color. Very complex beer to describe. Aroma has a sweet molasses tint to it. Texture starts out thin but seems to get heavier. Starts out sweet and traditions into a very salty bitterness. Has a very earthy multy, roasty, burnt, whatever flavor. Whatever it is, it's very strong and intense and put together in an amazingly balanced and successful way. Every sip seems to transition the beer in new ways to detecting flavors in different intensities. Have to give it good marks on such a unique way these flavors combine with each other.

With my son-in-law at Back Pew Brewing enjoying some really good beers. High, frothy tan head with a totally opaque black color. Strong coffee malt aroma. Soft but not as creamy as most oatmeal stouts. Brisk roasted malt. Bittersweet but leaning much more towards the bitter. This reminds me more of a traditional old style porter. Nothing fancy about this, just a good solid oatmeal stout.

With my son-in-law at Back Pew Brewing. Going to try out some of the fine beers here. This is a very strong bock. 7.2% should get our attention. It starts with a small very tan head. Deep red amber color, very clear. Strong malt flavor, somewhat sweet, no bitterness at the start. Texture is creamy and very smooth. One of the softest bocks I've ever had. A lot of punch to the flavor. This is definitely not swill.

Back at my son-in-law's house after a long day visiting six different Houston breweries. This is our night cap a blonde Doppelbock. Clear color, reddish orange amber. Not much aroma. Very soft texture. Malt forward with alcohol, fruity, purple grape, very bitter finish. Not enjoying this after a long day.
