My latest souvenir from Brussels, about two months ago. 🇧🇪🍺 The beer shows a relatively lucid, amber face. A velvety, off-white head surpasses one finger's limit and descends soon to a thick lace ring on the surface. A few tiny traces cling to the rim of the glass for longer. A good load of semisweet malt, somewhat biscuity, as well as candi sugar constitute the scent. The sugary note is a bit of an alert to my senses, normally I don't fancy sugar in beer but let me see how it behaves here. Moreover, I'm getting fruity aromas like tangerine and moderate pear among the nuances. The tastebuds enjoy hefty pale malt, again with a distinct biscuity touch. However, there's no trace of candi sugar in the taste, it's rather remote honey. A bit of orange peel, dried apricot and a pinch of lemon pulp are the fruits that I'm able to identify here. Alcohol is moderate and leaves a slight boozy tang behind. The body is medium to medium-full. The finish is bitter and slightly chemical due to alcohol. The malty sphere shrinks, and the fruits are just bitter reflections of especially the olfactory experience but also of the gustatory sphere. The aftertaste rocks like Hendricks, pushes down the accelerator, speeds like there's no tomorrow. The mouthfeel is medium-full and somewhat Belgiany. The sensation is first smooth and rather intense but turns a bit boozy and consequently tangy in the finish. Tripel is not among the easiest beerstyles, at least in my opinion. Some Tripels are too sweet, some fail on booziness. This Tripel is successful as it's not almost at all sweet while the booziness remains in control. The original recipe dates back to 1856, and it's still in use. If it worked in 1856, there's no reason why it wouldn't work today.
