Advent Calendar Beer #️⃣2️⃣2️⃣. This is scary! Freeze-distilled Eisbock. The style is not a problem: Eisbock is one of my most beloved beerstyles. But. The ABV. It clocks 22 %. Twentyfu*****two percent! Oh Lord. If this doesn't kill me, it'll make me stronger. Remains to be seen...
The beer is dressed in a deep dark brown veil. A dark burgundy reflection tweaks the color toward red. Looks thick. Kissel-like. And murky but it's actually lucid. The carbonation is considerably impotent, almost like dead. A minuscule fawn lace ring just appears on the surface and moves rushedly to history.
The scent finds intensive date cake. Sweet and big. Fig, prune, raisin, vanilla, Bourbon. Starts promising. And more follows: syrup, burned sugar, a whisper of cacao nibs. An attractive, multifaceted pack! This can't go wrong. Or it can, for sure, the ABV still makes me feel uncomfortable despite the lovely series of nuances. I can only find out!
The time is now. To taste the nuke. My first sip... Mmmmokay... Thick, for sure. And seriously warming. Alcohol is not entirely hidden, how could it be? However, it doesn't offend me, nor does it make me feel uncomfortable. Quite nice actually! Date cake is powerful on the tongue, too. Prune, raisin, syrup, brown sugar. That's the second wave. Bourbon is all over the mouth, fills every nook and cave. It's surprisingly copious but simultaneously very balanced. I don't get any woody oak barrel notes here but I do spot a hint of cacao nibs and, finally, emerging licorice. A big surprise! A big po–si–tive surprise indeed!!
This is a full-bodied beer, for sure. It feels full. And it is full. The end intensifies the licorice component and brings in a sweeter side to it. It merges with bowls of Bourbon and dark chocolate ganache. Awesome!
The mouthfeel is full, thick, kissel-like, viscous, deep and rich. Relatively complex. Moderately alcoholic and warming. Appealingly warming, deep in my throat, big time. Glues lips, somewhat sticky. Big. Yes. Astonishingly palatable. The ABV could ruin this in a million and one ways but this is successful.
