A Duo beer that Ryan got me. One of Martin Houses really cool two beers to a box collection. This one is a whiskey barrel aged blueberry sour. What could go wrong with that? Well, these two beer boxes are usually good so let's give it a try.
Pop the can and an immediate fruity aroma emerges, no whiskey barrel. Pours into the glass with a bright red color, slightly hazy, and a small pink head. The blueberry fruit aroma is exquisite. Still no whiskey barrel. Flavor is sweet but in a true fruit sense. Not sugary or artificial at all. Blueberry is distinct and has an actual, real fruit quality. There is some lactose that has softened the texture. In the background, the whiskey barrel aging gently adds to but doesn't dominate the entire flavor. The natural fruit sweetness along with a small tart sourness is balanced perfectly. The flavors from the first to the middle to the last never changes.
The more that Ryan and I talked back and forth about this beer, the more I liked it. It's not just that it is a good beer in its category, a sour. It's a good beer. I like it, sour or not. There's nothing artificial about the blueberries, I'm convinced it's real puree. It's not overly sour but more of a fruity tart. The whiskey barrel aging was a compliment to and not a dominant overpowering flavor. Probably the best sour I've had and would make a great breakfast beer.
