Nectarnomicon 6.5%, Holy Goat Brewing, Scotland

Nectarnomicon
6.5% New England IPA / Hazy IPA
This thick and juicy Nectar IPA was co-fermented with a wild strain of nectar specialist yeast harvested from wildflowers (Metschnikowia reukaufii) alongside another specialist yeast able to unlock bound thiols. This collaboration with Up Front Brewing combines our experiences of using Nectar yeast, and utilising polyfunctional thiols, with the goal to produce the most intensely aromatic and flavourful IPA possible. Dry-hopped with hefty quantities of Cryo Mosaic, Citra and Idaho 7. Artwork by Jimbob Isaac.
Lúpulos: Citra, Idaho 7, Mosaic

A it's just another fruity, cloudy strong IPA. Nothing special.

The most doom metal can design ever, maybe yes but then all their label designs are great! An IPA by Holy Goat is very odd! I believe they made a pale for a music festival a few times, may have been an IPA, but it wasn't released outside of the event so this is the first beer that's not a stout or the sours they're known for. Nectar yeast is new to me, but Holy Goat say they're experienced with it so I must have had it before in a sour. This IPA is a collab with Up Front Brewing, not sure if I know them but they're probably more familiar with IPAs. This brew is quite dark and mango coloured with zero head and completely opaque. Deeply juicy on the nose with mango, orange, peach, apricot and pine. Surprisingly carbonated in the mouth, it's odd, it's not fizzy away like a pilsner it's more an attack of hidden tiny bubbles that make you gaseous instantly. Soft on the tongue and it would be smooth if it weren't for the distracting carbonation, it's not creamy really. It has a very dry finish but that's not to say it's not flavourful...it's all tang this one. Grapefruit and nectarine in full force, lime, a non sweet peach and heft pine at the end. It's pretty weird really, not what I'm used to from Deya, Pollys, Verdant and the like. Well I supposed I've had dry and tangy IPAs before but I wasn't expecting it, I was hoping for a sweeter thicker affair. Getting over it I'd say it's leaning over towards a hybrid coast brew, as the pine is very strong and the dry as fook finish. It's very hoppy and aromatic but that's mostly constrained to the nose. In mouth it's strong hops and yeast tang, I'm guessing it's the nectar yeast that making this brew standout from the rest like this. It's not easy to drink, it sits heavy and the 6.5% alcohol is almost noticeable with the pine. Expect alot of burps. It's not bad by any means, just not my favourite approach to IPA. Big fans of pine will like this or those who love explicit hops, whereas I'd prefer more juice. Maybe it's the use of Cyro that's making is unadulteratedly hoppy but it's obviously been made with care and is high quality.
