Brought this back from Texas. Ryan finds these special Martin House beers. Two beers in a limited edition box. He keeps the box of course. They often use artificial flavors but never in the limited edition boxes. Came out of the can like motor oil, extremely dark and heavy. Small head, very little effervescence. Can tell that this thing is a heavy brew. Aroma brings both coconut and some alcohol based rum. Texture is heavy and syrupy, almost chewable. Flavor is heavy coconut and a deep sweet dark chocolate. Mounds Bar in a can. Extremely sweet, perhaps too sweet. Just when you start wondering where the cherry is, the finish arrives with a good dose of sweet cherry and the rum along with it. From the very first, Ryan and I agree that this is a very high four but not a five. But this beer never surrendered. As we discussed this beer, it continued to warm. And as it warmed and developed, it changed. Now a distinctive barrel aged rum and cherry somehow became the dominant flavor and the coconut dark chocolate came behind it. The over-the-top sweetness calmed down to the perfect level. This new circumstance and complexity is enabling the beer to rise on my scale. Unexpectedly, it is now fighting for the ultimate prize. The snifter glass, low in beer, has a powerful rum alcohol aroma. Most beers that I have given a 5.0 rating, started with it, and I unsuccessfully try to find a reason to bring it down. Can't remember the last beer that fought so hard to raise itself up into a 5.0. The real and uncompromising ingredients, the character, the complexity of the changing and evolving flavor, demands that I relinquish my highest rating to this beer.
