Doo - VI Imperial Fruited Pastry Sour, England

I was really cautious about this beer. 10% sour and lot's of adjuncts. But what! This is amazing beer! Lot's of amazing flavours! Mouthfeel is rich, balanced, dry, tart and smooth. Aroma is also amazing. I love this vanilla aroma. Like cherry pie. There are a lot, a lot of berries in the taste of this one. Also vanilla, lactose, cinnamon, cherries and tartness. This is so rich and so balanced that there are no hints of alcohol.

Deep ruby colour and opaque like blood! The head disappeared after a few mins and you can't see the fizz through the dense looking liquid. Pastry is picked up on the nose straight away thanks to vanilla and cinnamon aromas and these are subtly backed up by red fruits that you can't really pick out at this stage. 10% Imperial pastry stout with next to no fruit on the nose.. represents a risk. This beer is another 6 year anniversary brew by Neon Raptor just like the DIPA I had last week and that was impressive. Add to that Neon Raptor are the fellas who produced the first sour that made me say wow out loud, Massive Piranhas. If I ever see that again I'll snap it up! Neon make good sours, though not as good as my recent discovery; Holy Goat brewing. So let's dive into this... I was expecting a big hit of sour at the start which is common, but this sour builds toward the end where it sits as a solid tartness. It's soft in the mouth with juiciness and silkiness and it's got a surprisingly light body, just approaching medium and it's a 10% ABV! It's strangely morish actually, even though it's not very sour, it's very juicy in a tart way. It's a smooth blend of cherry & blackberry fruits and the sweet cinnamon & creamy vanilla sit behind the fruit..just about. A role reversal from the nose. This is good, Holy Goat sours have incredible finesse via complexity and refined flavours where as this brew by Neon Raptor has richness and smoothness with a more-ish quality via the juicy presentation and texture. It's impressive just as the DIPA was, more so even.
