Number 62 in our barrel-aged series, this imperial stout aged for 6 months in bourbon barrels. Imperialis conquers with a subtle sweetness and complex notes of vanilla and oak.

Congratulations to my son-in-law Ryan. He saved this beer for his 1500th review (not on this website, traitor!). We've had some fabulous Avery beers before so expectations are high.
Medium high head, tan head, did not pour as thick as most high alcohol stouts. Started this review with the beer too cold. Almost no aroma, just a little alcohol and some malt. Flavor is boozy with some dark fruit and finishes on the bitter side. Not much to like. We decided to use our hands to warm the sniffer glass to a more appropriate temperature. What a difference! Aroma now gives off strong Bourbon Barrel alcohol and strong ripe raisin. First sip is much stronger on the distinctly Bourbon Barrel alcohol flavor with it's woodsy char, heavy on the over roasted malt, and raisen that's present but receding in importance. We continued through long conversations until the Brew grew much warmer. Once past a nominal temperature, it lost most of it wonderful flavor and simply became boozy. This must be experienced at the correct temperature to be fully enjoyed.
At its best, most optimum temperature, this was an excellent beer. Be careful not to drink it too cold or too warm. Both will cause it harm. Ideally, thought it was a very good beer.
