My second smally-wally is an 11.2 % Imperial Oatmeal Stout from 🇮🇪 The brewery is new to me. The beer looks opaque, oily black. The head is fawn and descends to a rather dense lace ring wafting on the top for significantly long. The barrel comes through unstoppably. Rum, wood, sugarcane and vanilla compete to rush to my nostrils. Overripe dark plum and a pinch of molasses escort the main group. The scent gives a warming that an alcoholic slam may be to expect in the mouth. Well see... The taste profile is first actually approachable but very quickly the booziness enters the scene. Cacao nibs, a bit of dark chocolate and, yes, alcohol alternate on the tongue. Then comes something interesting: a berry-like medley of rowanberry and blackberry. Hmm, well... Must admit that it's unexpected but not bad though. Not a huge success either is this combination. As if I also received truly remote coffee beans but that sensation disappears rapidly. Maybe it was a Freudian wish. However, I certainly get later thin red wine foeder among the gustatory provision. The body is light-medium. ONLY!!! It's astonishingly weak for this level of ABV. The finish squeezes more woody foeder, red wine, alcohol and sour berries out. Not particularly appealing in this form. The aftertaste wants to be shot in the space but falls rapidly back to the ground. The mouthfeel is a bit vinous, faintly tart (🤔), intense and alcoholic. I expected fullness, I didn't get it. Maybe I expected something that I shouldn't have anticipated. The mouthfeel is also lip-glueing but not really sticky though, as well as woody and barrel aged. Btw, these 15 cl portions are well sufficient. I could even manage with 10—12 cl but this current small glass size is very welcome. 👍🏻
