Frootwood (2020) 8.4%, Founders Brewing Company, United States
2 notes
Frootwood (2020)
8.4% Fruit / Vegetable Beer
We took a crisp, light-bodied cherry ale and hid it away in oak barrels that have held both bourbon and maple syrup. After a lengthy stint, it emerged a changed beer, blanketed in notes of warm vanilla and earthy sweetness. The wood proves itself the star of this beer, adding depth and taming the tart cherry while the maple imposes a velvety texture that lingers for not a moment too long.

Side by side review with 2020 Frootwood (mothership brewery only release) 8.4% and 2021 Frootwood (barrel aged series release) 8%. 2020: Cherry, vanilla, maple syrup and bourbon in the aroma. Taste has cherry, light bourbon, maple syrup and vanilla. The body is medium-full with an appropriately low amount of carbonation. 2021: Cherry, bourbon, vanilla and maple syrup in the aroma. Taste has cherry, maple syrup, bourbon and vanilla. The body is medium-full with an appropriately low amount of carbonation. The bourbon is stronger in the 2020 vs. the 2021. The maple syrup is stronger in the 2021, making for a less bitter experience. Both are very well made and it's hard to choose a winner. I think I prefer the 2020 due to the more pronounced bourbon presence. Both are 4.25/5

Cherry, bourbon and oak in the aroma. Taste has cherry right up front, followed by subtle, yet flavorful bourbon and finishing with oak. Vanilla notes linger throughout. The body is medium+ with a low amount of carbonation. Very nice. Solid 4/5
