A bigger, bolder version of our Raison D'Etre.
This is a bulbous brown ale brewed with a bunch of malt, brown sugar and raisins.

Sicuramente un sapore ed un aroma interessanti, che non hanno incontrato il mio gusto, però sicuramente una birra da provare

Ryan said he needed for us to have a really, really good beer tonight so we pulled out this Dogfish Head. After studying this bottle and its website, oh Wow! He bought it for us to share 6 months ago but it was bottled January 11th 2019. They aged this crazy beer four years in the bottle. And it was 16.5% when bottled. This is going to be really interesting. Here goes.
While studying it in its brown bottle I thought it was going to be clear. Wrong. Once in the glass it looks like a muddy river, brown with traces of red on the perimeter. Plenty of effervescence while not having a high head. Aroma gives heavy malt, abundance of alcohol, and dark fruit of sweet prunes. Most beers with super strong alcohol are barrel aged. No traces of oak or barrel in this. This is complex. Waited five or six sips before making a comment, it kept changing as the mouth acclimated and it warmed. At first the alcohol was strong with a heavy malt, sweet prunes, and plenty of cooked brown sugar. An instant warmth went from the throat straight to the stomach. The following sips (you can only sip this beer) allowed it to develop. It seems to build upon itself, becoming stronger in both alcohol and flavor. The 16.5% evaporates into the nasal cavity and has a semblance of the Scottish ale Old Chub, only multiplied. The flavor morphs from dried prunes to a softer sweet raisin. The finish could be my favorite part. It is patient and stays. You just can't take another sip till the finish is done with you. It's the only constant in this evolving beer. Sweet powerful malt, dark fruit leaning toward a blend of raisin and prune, a dash of black pepper, and the kick of unaltered alcohol. It's balance is both surprising and welcome.
I have to admit, this is my first beer of the night and I'm really feeling this alcohol. Maybe my tolerance is low but this is strong stuff. Ryan bought a four pack, two for each of us. The other two are going to the beer celler for 2025. Hope I make it that long. Most beers are brewed for money, that's necessary. To brew a beer, bottle it and then wait 4 years to sell it, that's crazy. Dogfish Head, you are definitely on my bucket list of breweries.

Lots of raisins and I can definitely get the brown sugar. Taste has raisins. Some brown sugar shows up next and this is quite boozy. Medium-full body with a lower carbonation. Slightly medicinal. Good, but not great. 3.5/5
