Westvleteren 12
10.2% Abt / Quadrupel
This Trappist, also referred to as the Flemish Burgundy, has a dark amber colour, a stable, strong lacing and a white head. Westvleteren 12 is a masterpiece in its complexity but wonderful in its simplicity. The exquisite smooth taste of caramel and chocolate goes perfectly well with the sweet raisin and nutty notes in the aroma. Together with the firm alcohol percentage, it results in a pleasant full-bodied, long-lasting and warm aftertaste. Date is printed on the cap as DD.MM.YY, and indicates how long the beer will retain its properties if it is stored under the right conditions. This date is also the batch number.

Westvleteren XII pours a rich and dark mahogany colour with a minimal tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving behind a thin ring of lacing. The beer's appearance exudes a sense of depth and complexity. The aroma of Westvleteren 12 is a symphony of dark fruit notes, including raisins, figs, and plums, intertwined with hints of caramelized sugar, toffee, and a touch of cocoa. Subtle spicy phenols and a whisper of Belgian yeast add a layer of complexity to the bouquet. Upon the first sip, Westvleteren XII envelops the palate with a decadent array of flavours. Rich malt sweetness reminiscent of dark fruits, brown sugar, and molasses blends seamlessly with deep caramel and toffee notes. The complexity is further enhanced by nuances of dark chocolate, oak, and a gentle warmth from the alcohol content. This Belgian Quadrupel boasts a full body with a luxurious, velvety smoothness that coats the mouth. The carbonation is soft and understated, allowing the flavours to take center stage. The alcohol presence is notable but integrated, contributing a warming sensation without overshadowing the beer's depth. The finish is long and lingering, with layers of dark fruit sweetness slowly giving way to a dry and slightly boozy aftertaste. The complexity of flavours evolves on the palate, leaving a lasting impression that beckons for another sip. Westvleteren XII, produced by the Trappist monks of the Saint Sixtus Abbey in Belgium, is a legendary beer that lives up to its reputation as one of the world's finest Trappist ales. From its rich aroma to its multi-layered flavor profile, this Quadrupel exemplifies the pinnacle of brewing artistry. With its decadent dark fruit notes, caramelized sweetness, and intricate depth, Westvleteren 12 is a true masterpiece that rewards contemplative savouring.
