Smögenbryggar’n is a marine beer brewery on the famous, Swedish, west coast island called Smögen. Started as late as 2018 and have grown quite quickly and are now national with their beer. The “marine” style is, of course, popular among tourists but also with beer lovers looking for something extra. Not only located with direct contact to the sea and heritage from fishermen, but the brewery also uses local marine ingredients in their beer. For an example kelp/algae for flavor enhancing and umami. Sea salt and mussel shells for water treatment and stout making. Marine additives/ ingredients are not added to make the beer taste like the sea but to enhance the flavors already present from malt, yeast, malt etc. It gives the beer a marine twist but not too much. The Smögenbryggar’n beer was initially brewed for restaurants and bars. Developed with big flavor and food paring in thought. Nothing crazy/nerdy about the beer, it must be easy drinking and “chuggable”! Now accessible for the open market, through resellers like Systembolaget, it has quickly become very popular.
