Nightcap and the close of the weekend. A RIS has the honor to do the job. Pitch black. Fully impenetrable. No reflection whatsoever. The carbonation is introverted but manages to push up a bronze, dense moussy head that rises up to three fingers. The foamy crown dwindles gradually to a generous lace ring. Roasted malt, toasted rye bread, tobacco leaf and black coffee give a bit of challenge to my nose. Yet, the cocktail is relatively pleasant. Let me sip. The gustatory universe deviates from the olfactory one: raw cacao powder, dark chocolate, roasted malt, even a tad burned, bitter caramel and a twist of toasted rye bread. The taste offers more desserty flavors than what the fragrance suggests. The body is full. The finish is otherwise close to the actual taste experience but I'm starting to find licorice as an additional element on my tongue. The mouthfeel is full, deep, roasty and lip-glueing. Slow sipper at best.

Vaan mitäs sitä sitten kaapista löytyykään, tällainen Hollannin herkku jota on säästelty jo pari vuotta. On meinaan viimeinen pullo 2022 Biertonnen joulukalenterista joka on jäänyt syystä tai toisesta juomatta. Pullosta löytyy varsin klassinen tuhti barley wine. Olut on hyvin tumman ruskea, siirapin värinen. Vaahto on maitokahvin väristä ja varsin pysyvää sorttia. Tuoksu on perinteisestä barley winea, runsaasti karamellimallasta, pähkinäisyyttä ja alkoholia. Suutuntuma on paksuhko, makea ja hiukan kirpeä. Makeutta ei ole överisti, vaan kokonaisuus on jopa hiukan viinimäinen. Jälkimaku on samalla hapokas ja makea, hyvin lämmittävä. Sokerinen fiilis jää suuhun.

Niet echt mijn ding

An interesting beer. The beer has no label but a label imitating card that is attached to the neck of the bottle with a rubber band. I remember having had at least two other beers with no label, Westvleteren 12 (older vintages only) and Melnais Vilks from Latvia. The beer looks practically translucent, dark syrup brown. A burgundy reflection can be observed within the drink. Carbonation is modest as a latte-hued lace ring emerges on the surface. It contracts thinner but still remains alive. Syrup and dark malt can first be found in the scent. A bit of raisin follows right thereafter. That's it. Honestly speaking, I anticipated and hoped for more since this is supposed to be an English Barleywine (sweeter, less hoppy and usually more complex than their new world cousins). Well, I'm not too thrilled. Syrup, yes, on the tastebuds again. Alcohol doesn't really hide, rather vice versa: it lends a bitter, slightly chemical note that I could have done without. Resinous hops, dark plum peel, a tad raw cacao powder and a whisper of cookie seal the deal. Not really impressive... The body is medium to medium-full. Hmmm... not impressive this one either – 12.7 % should have deserved a more robust body in its support. The finish turns even more bitter and tangy, alcohol brags boldly. Brutalistic tree and concrete walls; I inhale the dust as I walk; brutalistic tree, I climb and fall; I'm entangled in the aftertaste, you see? The mouthfeel is medium-full, tangy, lip-glueing, moderately sticky, somewhat alcoholic and, hence, chemical. Definitely not balanced. A tad drying. Rather challenging; I try to appreciate this in its own right but I just can't imagine us in a deeper relationship.

Kalenterin tutkimista ja BW:tä lasiin lätkämatsin kylkeen. Runsaalla sokerilla sotkettua jäähtynyttä kahvia 😅 Kyllähän tämä ennen kaikkea sitä tynnyrin tarjoamaa "munaa" tarvitsee. Tällaisenaan ihan ok, mutta ei tarjoa mitään, miksi tätä esimerkiksi kaverille suosittelisi. 🤷🏻‍♂️
