Side by side review with Backwoods Bastard. This is a scotch ale aged separately in bourbon, rum and rye barrels, then blended together. Sweet caramel, bourbon and rum in the aroma. Taste has a more subtle caramel than the aroma indicated. Also, I'm getting a solid bourbon flavor almost immediately followed by rum. Some spiciness from the rye barrels comes through as well. The oak comes in towards the back end. Medium body with a medium-low amount of carbonation. The carbonation is more where I feel it should be for the style in this one, but the body is a little too thin. I like both a lot. Both are unique in their own right, but I think I prefer Backwoods Bastard. There's a lot I like about this beer. I'm a sucker for bourbon and rum combo aging, but it does take away from the bold flavors you get from aging in only bourbon barrels. The spiciness from the rye barrels is really nice too. The body could be more full; with a fuller body, this might have tied. Very good beer, but Backwoods takes the cake. 4/5

This is what a bourbon barrel aged scotch ale should taste like. All the wonderful things about a scotch ale and a great bourbon presence to tie it all together. I think I might put my last can up against Founders Backwoods Bastard to see how they compare. Definitely the best beer I had tonight. High 4/5
