Big Shanty 9.0%, Burnt Hickory Brewery, United States

Big Shanty
9.0% Stout
The original name of Kennesaw, our home town, Big Shanty is not a little beer by any means. Our graham cracker stout is a Georgia original. Made with honey, cinnamon and real graham crackers, it’s a roasty yet sweet milk stout.

A Kennesaw Georgia beer for my son-in-law in Texas. I've had this before but it was back in 2019. Can has a much better design now. Gave it a good rating back then, hope I don't change my mind. This is an imperial stout but it comes out of the can translucent like a cola. Doesn't seem at all heavy and can actually see light through it. Aroma doesn't give much help. Some malt, a little spice, not much else. Texture as expected, not heavy or syrupy, pretty light for an imperial stout. But it does have plenty of flavor. First I get some mild cinnamon. That's followed by a deep roasted malt and some light graham cracker. The finish leaves those flavors behind and chocolate and coffee take the stage. That was all pretty good. But the surprise came in the later sips. The flavors kept changing places. Later the graham cracker dominated the start with chocolate behind it and then deep roasted cinnamon coffee. Along the third sip that 9% alcohol started to create a little spicy burn. These flavors continued throughout the beer to shift around, staying distinctive and separate but changing their places in order. Unique is an understatement. I'll remember this beer for a long time.

I have had the Big Shanty beer before. Had it as the last of a good selection of stouts tonight. When comparing to other stouts the graham cracker it says it has does faintly come to the surface. Still a little dry but still a very good beer. My rating on it probably has gone up a little.

Short creamy head. Dark brown, not quite opaque. Burnt aroma. Strong roasted flavor, dry and slightly bitter finish. Very good.
