It's been a while since my latest order from Beer Republic. Now that I have received a box full of malty and hoppy delicacies, let me crack open the first sample. "Complicated Patterns" pours limpid, deep gold. Looks like a piece of the West Coast culture. The carbonation is brave and maintains a creamy, off-white head at one finger's level for relatively long. Basically no splashes are left behind. The scent surprises me as I don't get piney or crisp grassy notes. Instead, several fruits dominate the scent, such as mandarin, blood orange and cantaloupe, at least. A fairly ample floral note escorts the fruit bowl. The maltbill seems to be biscuity and, especially, oat-forward. Ripe. Alright, the fragrance is fruity, but the gustatory package gears more in the expected direction with crisp piney elements. The composition includes lemon, orange peel, raw melon and distinct piney flavors albeit not particularly powerful. The floral injection is still relatively distinct. As if a faint alcoholic hint could be discovered beneath the surface. And indeed, the maltbase gives oat biscuit, maybe also a bit of soft wheat and otherwise light malts. The body is light-medium, maximum. The finish is a couple of degrees tangier, probably due to alcohol, but not specifically much different from upfront. Why'd the aftertaste have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way it's acting like it's somebody else; gets me frustrated. The mouthfeel is light-medium, juicy, ripe, modestly crisp only, slightly tangy and remotely alcoholic. Tame, to be honest. I won't necessarily revisit this one in the future although the age (8.5 months now) must have something to do with the unimpressive experience.
