Ekte Øl, United Kingdom
3.0
A very lively pour this one is! Very hazy to the point of being opaque and a sunny amber hue like tropical juice. Rich aromas of pineapple, bubblegum, sweet pine, lime, maybe even honeydew! It's quite heady on the nose but appetising and alluring. Citra, Mosaic..a proven duo joined by the fellow classic craft hop Galaxy account for the lush array of fruits, hoppiness and aroma. In the mouth it is syrupy smooth but not pillowy soft, chewy or thick. The tropical tang and pine intertwines with the alcohol content, clocking in at 5.9% ABV, creating a big IPA impression. Ekte Øl is Norwegian for real ale the can tells me and with this in mind I am getting an ale vibe from this brew. A strong and hugely hoppy ale it would be mind you. Kviek yeast contributes to this brews piercing flavour massively, almost equal part to the Citra and Mosaic. Although this was a very lively pour the carbonation in glass and in mouth is not there, which could be out down to transportation, age and storage. This can has travelled and isn't new born as my friend kindly sent me a few to try. Can't rule out the cause being the brew method and result though. Sharp citrus cutting through sweeter pine and tropical fruit flavours works well. Tried and trusted. A lack of big oats is sticking with me though, particularly having had a Polly's the other day. That said it is smooth and carries the hoppiness in a slick ale fashion. Watery comes to mind, very flavourful but quite drinkable, it's hard to pin down my precise exceptions to this brew other than how I've already described it. A syrupy, hoppy, tangy, kviek punchy India pale ale. There's something not quite right about this brew/example but the hops haven't died that's for sure as the finish is long and persistent. It's more a hop fest than a juice bomb.
