Corvallis Extra IPA 7.4%, Elusive Brewing, England

Corvallis Extra IPA
7.4% India Pale Ale
We teamed up with our good friends at Unbarred to create this nod to one of the classic West Coast IPAs. One of the beers that formed part of our collective journeys of discovery. Head Brewers Jordan and Andy used to love brewing this style of assertively bitter and hoppy beer at home before their hobbies got out of control and Unbarred and Elusive were born!

Corvallis Extra IPA, England
3.0
Toffee coloured and partly transparent collab brew. Hoppy and forestry on the nose with caramel malt and a subdued citrus scent. Syrupy and smooth in the mouth yet it fizzes away like popping candy. A deep treacle and malt whiskey flavour imparts straight away followed by mango and lime chutney and a pine finish that's darker than a NEIPAs dank resinous pine might be. I'm not huge on west coasts, even though I appreciate the malt that's vacant from New Englands. Malt, chutney and pine doesn't provide for much variation. One might argue NEIPAs are all the same juicy beers but they have varied fruit portrayals... citrus, stone, tropical with varying sharpness, sweetness, dankness, weed or pine or none. This west coast style brew, like most others, remind me of Olde English proper ales. To be fair this is different to other Westies, it's not very citrusy at all, instead leaning toward whiskey and treacle. The 7.4% ABV isnt explicit but it may help provide the overall likeness to Old Speckled Hen. I believe theres a heavier version of that famous ale and I'd say it would be even closer of a resemblance. I'm sure my bias is colouring my perception on this beer, but hey preferences are subjective and probably affects objectivity. That all said, it's a nice quality and nice tasting beer. If your a fan of malt, west coasts or Old Speckled Hen then you'd like this.
