Sour Series - Barrel Aged Imperial Sour Ale With Tangerine And Chocolate, Hungary
4.5
This one is crazy from the get go. Imperial, barrel aged and chocolate, aren't words you would expect to see with a sour beer. The pour from the can ha slots of fizz but no foam and left a dark orange, headless body with lots of carbonation up the side of the glass. The scent is immediate sour funk, like a barrel aged saision. Lots of white grape and sour bascillus. Mouthfeel is crisp, very sharp. Lots of bubbles tingling in the mouth, coupled with the sourness and the warmth of the 9.2% is really something else. Taste is an immediate hit of sour white grapes/wine, extraordinary funk of the extra fermentation, tonnes of tangerine is constantly present like a sort of backbone while the coca nibbs come in at the end to ease the sour edge. This is a pretty wild beer. Very ambitious and it really delivers.

First barrel aged imperial sour I've ever tried! Dark orange, bit cloudy look. Sour aroma coming through mixed with bitter notes. Strong sour kick with the first sip followed by a bitter aftertaste the cocoa/chocolate brings nicely. I fail to note any vanilla taste. The flavour balance between sour/bitter is pretty nice, however it feels very strong. No surprise with 9.3% ABV.
