I often use traditional English ale as a negative descriptor of craft beer but here I am with a bitter by Polly's! Seems several breweries are doing this, making bitters or even milds. Mahogany caramel colour with decent haze and a contrasting head that struggles to survive. Fruity and caramel malt on the nose in the expected manner of sweet chutney fruits and warming caramel with a touch of light whiskey. It's quite bright smelling actually and an appetising appeal. It's very very smooth in the mouth, silkier than cream. Ooh this is different actually, it's not a bitter of old. I have fond memories of drinking proper English beer growing up in late teens and coming back to it via Polly's isn't the same. It's not an accurate portrayal of English classics because it's better! It has a definite quality and finesse which I never had back in the day, even with the best best bitters, ESB and the like. This is gorgeous, nicest bitter I've ever had, seriously. That all said it's still a bitter...well kind of. The body and exaggerated hops is quintessentially Polly's. It's a zombie or metamorphosis, a craft IPA transformed into a bitter. Sheer quality but a lack of depth and individual fruits to pick out. It remains a vague fruity chutney with sweet malt. Although you can't really pick out an obvious fruit it has a stronger flavour than any bitter or old timer IPA. The hoppiness is very pleasing, it really lifts it away from bitter. I mean when have you ever had a bitter that tastes like a hoppy craft beer? Maybe there are others in the same vain as this but I'm hesitant to believe it would be as good as Polly's representation. Trying my hardest...I get mango chutney, pineapple cubes, toffee apple, twiglets (yes!), ovaltine and maybe sweet cinnamon. The flavour doesn't improve overtime really, the impact of this beers qualities like it's smooth body reduces as you get used to it and the vague nature doesn't clarify later, but it does remain continuously impressive within the restraints of the classification that is 'bitter'.

Wow it's really good! I mean, it smelled like a Polly's when I cracked open the can but it's certainly a bitter just with their hazy/dry-hopped signature.
