Advent Calendar 2023, Day 10. Just bottled two sets of Small Beers. Interesting flavors to be tasted soon. Took some time. Now the beer.
The beer is covered by a muddy, oily, shiny black veil. A velvety fawn head crawls to one finger's milestone and descends gradually to a neat lace ring on the sides.
I sniff the beer... Ooh... So nice! Seductive balmy package. I can recognize a good series of aromas: caramel, toffee, chocolate, cacao nibs, baked apple, fig, vanilla, faint nut. Resembles a Barley Wine rather than an Imperial Stout. Beautiful!
The flavor profile is a titillating siren song to my tastebuds. Irresistible. Yes! I'm receiving unmistakable Port, a hit of red wine, dark chocolate, bags of cacao nibs, slightly harsh rye whiskey and soaked oak barrel. Interestingly, most BW nuances, like caramel, toffee and fig, are absent from the tongue. Now I'm enjoying substantially an IS identity. Barrel aging is apparent.
The body is medium-full to full. Not entirely full. I so much hoped it was. No can do. The sustained finish intensifies the barrel segment, especially the whiskey side but, to some extent, also the Port one. The chocolatey vibe gains a bit of burned coating and vanishes then altogether.
The mouthfeel is medium-full, mellow, relatively velvety, lip-glueing, intense and absolutely barrel aged. It's deep, rich, complex and layered. So neatly balanced. 🖤🖤🖤
