I've tasted the standard version of this Stout on 23 December. Now I'll turn to a gin barrel aged version. The beer is dressed in bright black. Carbonation is regular, as a result of which a silky fawn head elevates up to one finger. Retention is short, and a thin lace ring only adorns the top after a short while. Dark roasted malt, a remote coffeeish note and some raw chocolate constitute the olfactory provision. I said earlier that the basic version is Baltic-Porter-ish. Well, this is pretty much of the same caliber. The taste is both similar to the standard version and also different from it. The same parameters include roasted malt and hefty licorice. Nevertheless, caramel – whether bitter or something else –, is now absent. Instead, I'm picking juniper berry, soaked barrel and a bit of tangy alcohol that must be remnants of gin. I expected also something citrusy but I don't find anything like that. The body is light-medium to medium. As if slimmer than the first version. 🤔 The finish gives even more powerful bitter licorice, barrel nuances, juniper berry and tangy alcohol. No major change anyway. The aftertaste has journeyed farther, it is everything we've learned and more. The mouthfeel is light-medium, roasty, again a bit dry and drying. It's still woody, but clearly barrel aged, and probably a tad smoother than the baseline version. Just a marginal difference in rating.
