Joutsenlaulu Sahti, Finland

Christmas without Sahti is not Christmas. I've had our own homebrewed Sahtis in several Christmases but this year, when we have moved to our "new" house about two months ago and are still living in the middle of the construction/renovation chaos, we don't yet have proper facilities to brew anything here. Hopefully soon. So, commercial Sahtis will have to do this Christmas. This particular Sahti comes from Orimattila. Must be their first Sahti made for sale. This very bottle was the last bottle they had, I was told. 👍🏻 The Sahti is veiled in a turbid, medium-dark brown hue. Carbonation is suppressed but there is some anyway. A hasty creamy head pops up on the top and dissipates quickly to a subdued lace ring. The nose picks sweet fermented banana, a bit floury malt and a whisper of oat cookie. Nice and traditional. The flavor medley is composed of relatively sweet fermented banana, floury rye malt, juniper twig and a tiny pinch of cookie. There's also a modest sour twist among the gustatory sphere as if a pinch of rowanberry. Normally, a sour nuance in Sahti is unwelcome and considered an off-flavor but I don't find it that disturbing here. Alcohol is basically well hidden but I can get an intriguing warming sensation in the throat. The body is medium. Fairly standard for this ABV. The finish loses part of its sweetness and elevates the husky component higher, especially rye and juniper are more prominent at this stage. Alcohol is still absent whereas the sour hint is present. Those moments from birth to death, reflected on the eyelids, make some believe in God, I guess, and others in Devil, or whatever, but not in this world. The mouthfeel is medium, a bit husky, lip-glueing but still slightly dry. Yet, medium-smooth, marginally warming and relatively traditional. I wouldn't call this old-school though. All in all, a solid package!
