2022 Bourbon Barrel Commitment 15.7%, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, United States
1 notes
2022 Bourbon Barrel Commitment
15.7% Imperial Stout
Aging our Commitment Imperial Stout in a blend of whiskey barrels for well over a year created a grandiose beer in all aspects. Showcasing notes of rich figs, fresh vanilla, ripe strawberries, toasted oak, and dark chocolate, this beer weilds a dense, silky texture that softly grips the pallet. Yet even with such bold flavors, it is remarkably balanced and drinkable, making this beer a suitable toast to a special occasion.

2022 Bourbon Barrel Commitment, United States
5.0
Sharing this with a "Meeting" video with my son-in-law. This Stout comes from a fantastic Saint Arnold brewery in Houston. The moment you see the name "Commitment" on the bottle the expectations become very high. At 15.7%, this should be special. From the bottle, I smell intense bourbon alcohol and ripe figs. Some faint notes of dark chocolate in the background. Pours from the bottle with almost no head whatsoever, just a minor swirl on the top of the liquid. Opaque brown color and seemed heavy. The aroma coming from the snifter glass conveys more of a heavy concentrated prune, more dark chocolate and an intense oak Bourbon Barrel alcohol. First sip and this beer is going to battle (my son-in-law and I use this term for a beer that's trying to achieve a 5.0 rating). This is a very heavy beer, heavy texture but, surprisingly, it's not sticky or syrupy at all. From the beginning the 15.7% alcohol comes right at you. I've had strong alcohol beers before, with most it's a detriment. But this came across as very smooth and complimented all the flavors to follow. Strong figs, oak Bourbon Barrel, but not charred, and perhaps some vanilla smoothing out the edges. The finish is unmistakably dark chocolate. Why it wasn't there at the beginning is a mystery. The whiskey barrel alcohol stays consistent from first to last. I would like to say that that's the end of the review but as it warmed, it's characteristics changed. The whiskey barrel flavor became much more oaky, gained some earthy notes to it. The finish became all toasted Bourbon Barrel alcohol and the dark chocolate totally disappeared. From first to last, from cold out of the bottle until it warmed in the glass, this beer was outstanding. My highest rating when it was cold and as it matured and warmed it was still a fantastic beer. They brew this every year. This 2022 edition is fantastic. We both gave this a 5.0.
