Small Beer: Crowberry, Finland
3.8
Thank God it's Friday and beer o'clock! Terrible week behind! I'll kick off the hopefully relaxing weekend with a homebrew. This is a "small beer", made of the second runnings of the Sahti wort. This time the flavoring is crowberry that I picked myself in a marsh in July. The ABV is exceptionally low 2.7 %, which surprises me since the Sahti itself (Smouldering Genome...) proved to clock fairly high at 9.2 %. Normally, the small beers end up in the range of 3–4 %. The beer wears a relatively foggy, deep copper gown. A moderate red reflection is certainly there, as well. Carbonation is decent, not too bold but works okay. A clean white, velvety head falls short of one finger. Nevertheless, retention is long as the dense foamy cap seems not to die at all. The scent can clearly be linked to crowberry. It's very scanty since crowberry doesn't give almost any nuance at all. Just a faint twist that resembles a medley of blackcurrant and cranberry, escorted by modest malt. The taste is certainly thin but offers fruity and berry-like flavors: I can identify crowberry, blackcurrant and blackcurrant tea. The malty side is a bit crackery and also somewhat tea-like. Tartness is observable albeit obscure. It must originate from the crowberry juice that I squeezed from the berries to the wort. The body is skinny. The finish actually intensifies the crowberry flavor and tartness in the mouth. The components are otherwise like upfront but their relative weights live a bit: maltiness declines while tea-like and berry flavors grow. I would appreciate such a package already in the actual gustatory experience. The beautiful crow and all those black feathers, perched deep in the soul of the aftertaste, won't let me go. The mouthfeel is thin but I wouldn't necessarily call it 'watery'. It's slightly tart, marginally dry, even remotely astringent as well as drying. It's also reasonably berry-dominant, quite refreshing and zippy. Can't wait to drink this in sauna where these small beers are meant for.
