Dry January has ended. 33 days without alcohol (only up to ~1 % was allowed). 40 nonalcoholic beers and other drinks reviewed during that period, some were astonishingly delicious while some others almost terrible. Most of them somewhere inbetween.
Now it's time to relubricate the engine! And what would be a perfect way to start tasting and reviewing good beers after a long period? NEDIPA? Imperial Stout? Maybe Bourbon barrel aged? Or could it be Barley Wine? Any of those would be nice but not perfect. There's only one perfection. And it's SAHTI!
This Sahti is a mystery. It comes from Jämijärvi. A neighbor's friend's neighbor's friend brought it to us. For free. Someone must have told them that we are Sahti people 😉☺️ I never say "no" to this kind of offers!
The Sahti is hazy brown with an amber hint. Interesting. Not unique though, we had Christmas Sahtis of similar color. Still not too common either.
The nose receives sweet biscuit, a good load of banana, a suggestion of dried apricot and a bit of something interesting: chocolate. Quite nice!
The tongue is anxious to have something to sense after more than a month! I give mercy and sip. I find fermented banana and simultaneously a strongly grainy flavor that is also moderately edgy. Furthermore, I pick a pinch of rye malt, clove and faint alcohol. No chocolate. The palate is, generally speaking, more fruity than biscuity or malty for that matter.
The body is medium-full at maximum. the finish offers hefty fermented banana peel, bitter clove and a powerful grainy punch. The Finnish is astonishingly short.
The mouthfeel is a tad intense, medium-full, distantly tangy and slightly alcoholic. Smooth but seductive. Goes down easily although doesn't open the Gates of Heaven.
