The name of the beer is a treat. It was my biggest reason to buy this in the first place. Hope it yields what the name promises. The beer colors opaque, pitch black. A beautiful tan head grows one finger tall and dissolves fast to a neat ring. A hair-thin haze wafts considerably longer on the top. So far, so good. The scent is surprisingly numb. Banana is recognizable but powerless. Cacao nibs are even less pronounced, truly weak as a matter of fact. Black light-roasted malt and alcohol creep more bravely to the forefront than the real lead vocalists of banana and cacao. Leaves me a bit confused... The taste identity is, fortunately, braver. Cacao nibs are copious and give a mouthwatering dark chocolatey impression. Banana is still suppressed but identifiable and seriously overripe. Strangely enough, the banana is recognizable only when the beer is not too warm because when the beer warms up a bit more, the banana vanishes and becomes replaced by alcohol warmth. Dark malt, a decent amendment of vanilla and a hint of oat biscuit seal the deal. The body is full. The final slide offers intensified alcohol, black malt with a faintly roasted touch, and other general Stout flavors rather than banana split. First we need a big strong aftertaste, then slide and do it to it, the banana split is a groovy groovy dance. The mouthfeel is full, substantially thick, sticky, mouthcoating, viscous, desserty, moderately alcoholic and warming. This is adjuncted, no doubt. The mouthfeel gets even kissel-like when I pour the last part of the can; I should have obviously shaken the can cautiously to mix the layers more evenly. Now a piece of advice for those who are still to taste this beer: normally Stouts taste bigger and more opened up when warmer. This behaves differently: it's better a bit cooler than warm. The unwanted boozy nuances occupy more space when the beer gets warmer. Not sure if I have ever had this kind of experience before. The rating is difficult: first, I wasn't impressed and wanted to give 3.5. Then it started to improve and my rating rose to 3.9. At the very end when the superthick slush found its way to my mouth, I was ready for as much as 4.5. Let me then give an average of the three, that is 3.97 ≈ 4.0.
