Bishop's Barrel No. 20
8.5% Dubbel
Bishop's Barrel No. 20 Sorachi Ace Dubbel Aged in Red Wine Barrels with Brettanomyces and Raspberries Bishop’s Barrel No. 20 continues to expand on our wine inspired beers. For this release, we adapted BB16 - a Belgian-Style Dubbel aged in Red Wine Barrels with Brettanoymces - and expanded on it by adding a small amount of raspberries, which was added to every third barrel. The resulting beer pours a ruby/blood red hue with a sandy colored head. Dark fruit, red wine, and an earthy/spiced funk are pronounced in the aroma with subtle notes of cherry almond in the back. The flavor is candied dry fruit upfront, with an oak and wine finish. It finishes dry with a slight tartness and medium body. Date Brewed: October 25, 2016 Date Racked: November 24, 2016 Date Bottled: February 19, 2018 Beer style in bbl: Sorachi Ace Dubbel Type of Barrel: Red Wine Barrels Original Gravity: 1.072 Final Gravity: 1.010 Alcohol: 7.9% ABV prior to barreling 8.5% ABV after barreling Bitterness: 26 IBU

January 27th, 2023. At Saint Arnold Brewing for their Barrel Aged night with Ryan. This is our 12th Brew of the evening. Last one, room is spinning. I've had this one before. December of 2021. Did not care for it much then, but my appreciation for brewers who make unusual beers has developed. It was brewed in 2016, bottled in 2018, and now we enjoy it in January of 2023. A long journey. It was very dry, raspberries, spice, some black pepper. Traces of red wine. Now we crawled into an Uber for the ride home. Had a really rough next day.

Oh my God, what has my son-in-law found. Bought this someplace in Houston and it turns out this is so limited edition. Brewed in 2016, bottled in 2018 at 8.5%, this 5-year-old beer could be strong as hell. No way this thing is blood red in color, this is a very hazy bronze. Intense aroma of raspberry wine, plenty of alcohol in the forefront. I immediately get a very funky flavor. Sour definitely, barrel aged definitely, a peppery spiced raspberry and wine notes are all experienced. Exceedingly dry, makes the mouth pucker. Finishes without change maintaining its dry and sour characteristics. Wanted desperately for this beer to be special and outstanding but I just can't get there. This reminds me of a Merlot wine, dry and tart. Never cared for those so my rating on this beer will probably be unfair. If you love dry red wines you should definitely try this beer.
