Small Beer: Aronia, Finland

Hoppy Father's Day for all the Pint Please folks who wish to celebrate this special day! Today is the Father's Day in Finland. I know that the other countries may have different dates to celebrate it. The picture shows my present. 🤎 The beer is the second homebrewed Small Beer, made of the second runnings of the other two regional Sahtis. The additional flavor comes from aronia, also known as chokeberry. If common yarrow is healthy, aronia is superhealthy with lots of vitamins, especially several of type B and C. The flavor of aronia follows the suit: it's acrid but not really bitter in my opinion. The mouthfeel of the berry is strongly astringent as if it absorbed all the fluids from the mouth and dried it completely up. It really tastes "healthy", for which reason it's obviously not widely used in commercial farming. Nevertheless, the sugar content of aronia is astonishingly high, something that you wouldn't believe when chewing aronia berries. 😝 The color of the beer is entirely foggy, mahogany. It's beautiful! The red hue comes from the deep dark purple aronia berries that I floated in the wort for a week or so and even pressed the juice in the beer before bottling. Still a bit introvert carbonation produces a creamy beige head that exceeds one finger and dwindles soon to a frazil-icy lace ring on the surface. The note of aronia is detectable in the scent. It's quite shy. However, the maltbase is almost paralyzed in the fragrance, only a distant pinch of cookie tries to move forward. Aronia can surely be tasted in the beer. It's recognizable but not too overwhelming and, hence, not excessively challenging. It does have a faint acrid element though. Slightly sour juicy without being a Sour Ale. The malt cocktail is introvert with a pinch of cookie and lemon zest. The body is light minus. Very decent for 3.8 %. The finish gives aronia juice and an interesting remote twist of blackberry. The end is short to medium. The mouthfeel is light, juicy, slightly astringent and a bit drying. Refreshing and balanced, too, will probably work well in sauna. Will certainly try. I like the beer's aronia flavor that isn't too timid but not excessive either. I also like the fact that despite the lower ABV than that of the common yarrow version, the body isn't any skinnier.
