Nightcap. From our homebrewery. It's a continuation and modification of our raspberry licorice stout that we produced a year ago. That was (and still is) a very nice homebrew because it seems to stand the test of time bravely with the key flavors persisting powerful unlike the majority of our Flavored Stouts whose flavors fade after 3–6 months. I keep my fingers crossed for the same with this brew, as well.
This beer is otherwise relatively close to "Charlie Bit My Raspberry" but contains an additional component of blackcurrant. The ABV is lower though.
The beer colors opaque, matte black. Carbonation is introvert but creates a lovely silky tawny head that grows two fingers tall. Retention is significantly long. A cute dense lacing caps the surface and bends upward against the bowl of the glass. The extremely sluggishly retreating foam leaves no traces on the glass.
Fresh raspberry and surprisingly intensive licorice emanate their nuances to the nose. Blackcurrant escorts the pair but tries to escape from the radar. Interestingly, while the raspberry is like fresh mash, blackcurrant is sweeter jam-like. Vanilla is really shy when it seasons the medley.
Licorice and raspberry take the lead in the gustatory race. In this order. The order is different from the scent's order. Vanilla doesn't show off but is not entirely hidden either. Blackcurrant is certainly there but not sweet jam-like, rather like blackcurrant leaf and giving even a bit of blackcurrant twig.
What I really 🖤 in this beer, is the intensity of the flavors. They waltz nicely and linger in the mouth for long. Intriguing!
The body is light, not more. I'd love it more robust but it seems to be the weakest link of our homebrews quite often. The finish offers fairly hefty licorice, some blackcurrant leaf and a suggestion of blackcurrant mash. Raspberry decides to take another route and disappears from the radar screen. Neither do I find vanilla anymore. The aftertaste watches viral videos on the internet for a long time and falls asleep tired as it is.
The mouthfeel is flavorful, strongly rich in berries, somewhat light, smooth and balanced. it's both natural and also rather candy-like.
In conclusion: the body falls behind that of "Charlie Bit My Raspberry" but I like the extra blackcurrant, the balanced cocktail as well as the fact that the flavors don't shy away from my tastebuds. 🖤🖤👍🏻
