Small Beer: Black Currant Leaf, Finland
3.7
The last plant/herb/berry-flavored Historical Ale for now. This is blackcurrant leaf flavored. I hope this doesn't let my expectations down like the previous birch edition. The appearance is medium-murky, dark brown. Carbonation is standard, ranges between the richer Birch and less pronounced Spruce. The dense creamy head rises one finger tall. A neat moussy layer wafts longer in the top. I'm hoping to find blackcurrant leaf in the scent. And indeed, the slightly woody nuance of blackcurrant twig and leaf come forward to the nose. Yess! 👍🏻 A malty proposal emanates additionally to the nostrils. I can't find those sweeter components, like cookie, this time. The taste profile is actually nice: I pick blackcurrant branch and a good amount of leaf. Blackcurrant leaf is obviously a heftier ingredient than birch leaf. Berry I can't find but I'm not supposed to since I hadn't used blackcurrant berries in the beer. Malt crackers and multigrain bread season the palate. A gentle hoppy touch pleases the tastebuds discreetly. The body is thin. The finish travels on the same path as the actual taste. The aftertaste infuses blackcurrant leaves into tea and enjoys an evening refreshment. The mouthfeel is thin, distantly tart, slightly dry and drying. It's also faintly fragrant as well as gulpable. Doesn't disappoint me. Great!
