Enchanting Genome of Sahti: Black + Caramel, Finland
4.2
Sahti time — again! 🍺 This brew is a darker interpretation of Sahti, and steps a couple of degrees out of the traditional Sahti landscape. The Sahti colors murky, dark brown. Looks very chocolatey. And again, truly oppressed carbonation creates almost no head at all, just a hair-thin chain of bubbles emerges on the top for a second or two. The nose receives, first and foremost, dark chocolate and a bit of syrup. That's it. The tongue gets surprised because of the hefty flavors that don't originate from the conventional sphere of Sahti experience. Raw chocolate, raw cacao powder, a good amount of syrup and dark caramel constitute the taste profile. The chocolatey touch is interesting since there's no chocolate malt in this Sahti. it must be a result of the combination of caramel and black malts. I can also pick a faint roasted hint. Overall, the sweetness is less pronounced here than in the previous one. The body is medium-full. The finish is dark chocolatey and a tad syrupy. Not really different from upfront. The aftertaste jumps in cold water and, to its big surprise, doesn't die but actually loves it. The mouthfeel is rather full, moderately intense, sticky and still relatively smooth. it's also soft but I wouldn't call this 'velvety'. The mouthfeel is also slightly roasty but still gulpable. Certainly not a classical Sahti, and I like it a lot this way!
