What should I expect of an American Oat Strong Ale made in 🇧🇷? Certainly not a cloudy, pale orange beer that looks like peach nectar! That's how it is though. It captures my attention already in this very start! Carbonation is reasonable and releases a pure white, frogspawny head that almost reaches one finger. Soon a mere hair-thin lace ring adorns the top. If the appearance takes me with surprise, the scent is at least equally exceptional: am I sniffing a piña colada? I'm picking copious coconut and zesty pineapple, accompanied by orange pulp and some mushy mango, maybe even a whisper of honeydew melon. If this is characteristic of an American Strong Ale, I'd join the fanclub immediately. Hell yeah, I AM a fan of American Strong Ales even though they have so far been totally different! I'm more than confused but I love this confusion! Alrightish. Let me sip the nectar. Piña colada is indeed there: coconut and pineapple can't be missed. Nevertheless, instead of rum, I receive a boozy tang that rather reminds me of vodka. Mango refuses to go anywhere and wants its friend papaya to climb to the stage. Furthermore, smaller amendments of orange pulp, honeydew melon and oat biscuit as well as faint peach and nectarine can be identified among the gustatory components. Loads of tropical delicacies in one package! My confusion is almost unbearable! The body is medium to medium-full. The finish carries many of the earlier nuances neatly up to the end. Coconut is worth mentioning as the backbone of the package. Pineapple nearly surrenders for the citruses and stonefruits. The aftertaste travels to the end of a rainbow and finds a treasure. The mouthfeel is tropical, juicy, pulpy and somewhat lip-glueing. It's also slightly boozy, distantly warming, still smooth, crushable and quaffable. Confusing for sure. And really unpredictable. No boredom allowed. Completely different from a standard American Strong Ale. A threat or opportunity? I'd say an opportunity. Yes, an opportunity. It is. 👍🏻
