All fruit, rye and wheat were destroyed. No excess grain could be found in the surrounding areas. As luck would have it, the buckwheat crop hadn't been sowed yet, so enough was planted to sustain everyone through the long winter. The year 1859 is still known as the great buckwheat year! We infuse local wildflower and buckwheat blossom honey that we purchase from a local bee keeper to enhance the flavor that is as smooth as fresh milk, crisp as a mountain morning and finishes like a sunset.
