Turtle Murder (2021) 8.5%, Buffalo Bayou Brewing, United States

Turtle Murder (2021)
8.5% Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy
This ambitious beer started five years ago with a basic Scotch Ale. It was good, but it needed something. More caramel! More chocolate! But it was still only good. And then our brewers said, “Let there be pecans!” And they called it “Mud Turtle." And it was very good. Most breweries stop at very good. Instead, we challenged our brewers to murder Mud Turtle; the result is in your hands right now. Brace yourself for liquid carnage. It starts with pecans on the nose, followed by a rich mouthfeel of caramel, chocolate and peanut butter (Yes! Peanut Butter!) and ends with a smooth vanilla finish. Tasting Notes Pecans on the nose with a caramel mouthfeel followed by chocolate, peanut butter and vanilla.

Enjoying with my son-in-law in Houston Texas from an excellent Buffalo Bayou Brewing company. Pours with almost no head. Deep clear red in color. Almost no aroma. Very little carbonation. Begins with a typical Scottish ale flavor and then transcends to some mild chocolate with caramel. Finish has more flavor in the bitter hops with a fading peanut butter. Never really picked up on the pecans, which for me, is a difficult flavor in any brew. While I love the way that porters and stouts are able to accommodate strong flavors, it is difficult to do this with Scottish ales. I think they have done a good job trying that with this brew.
