Who Let The Hops Out (And Ate My Mango?), Finland
3.5
My second homebrewed IPA to be re-reviewed is a Mango Milkshake IPA. The darkness has discreetly crawled in and the color of beer is now more difficult to document. You just have to believe my description: the color hasn't changed at all, still astonishingly "appealing" 😂 The good thing is that I don't see any particles floating in the beer, they are probably at the bottom of the bottle. Let them stay there. The carbonation and head are also unchanged. The scent is still restrained. Faint mango can be spotted but the citrusy side has also improved marginally: whispers of orange and grapefruit as well as a transient hint of apricot. A very minor improvement. The taste beats the fragrance nicely. Again. Now that I read my previous analysis, the only things that I would now put differently are the mango that is not sourish at all but rather canned or puree, and the second one is the intensified citrusy punch, particularly orange and bitter orange peel but also grapefruit. The drawback, nevertheless, is the diminished mango flavor. Hence, a little improvement and an equally little deterioration cancel each other, and the result is zero. The body has remained the same. The finish is still nice but, like the actual taste, has geared more citrusy than other tropical fruity. The duration of the aftertaste is now even shorter. The mouthfeel has approached that of the "standard" IPA: the moderate thickness and tropical character have moved to the sidelines. This is still softer than the "standard" IPA but not as soft and smooth and nectar-like as how I experienced it the first time. My conclusion is that this was tastier in the first time. Now it's closer to the "standard" IPA. My rating initially was 3.6. I'll reduce it now to 3.5.

Who Let The Hops Out (And Ate My Mango?), Finland

The second homebrewed IPA, now it's a mango flavored Milkshake IPA. The hops are identical to "Who Let The Hops Out". This version was flavored with a rather generous amount of mango puree and completed with lactose. The story behind this beer can be found in my review of "Who Let The Hops Out". The beer pours fully turbid with a color that is like butterscotch mixed with mango nectar. Awkward as hell 😂 but no minus points this time either. A pinch of flakes sink to the bottom of the glass, it must be mango puree as it was impossible to force it to stay within the pouch in fermentation. The carbonation is brave, for which reason I pour the beer extra carefully and get a tiny-bubbled, airy, cream-colored head that grows one finger tall. Unlike the first "base" IPA, the retention is substantially shorter and the head melts almost entirely away. Only a hair-thin lace ring remains on the surface but no other traces can be spotted on the glass. The scent is truly subdued. I can detect faint mango nectar but the citrusy side is so weak that it's impossible to break the content down in detail. Disappointing at first. Fortunately the mango punch gains a bit more power when the beer becomes warmer. The sip saves my day. Nothing magnificent but again a decent package: I find copious light-sour mango, faint apricot, a small dollop of orange juice and lemon pulp. The hoppy touch intensifies all along the way but remains fruity and manageable. Lactose can't actually be depicted but it surely further rounds the palate. Interestingly juicy and nectar-like but also a tad flat. The body is light-medium but it's likely due to the fruity adjunct than the malt itself since this is as low as 4.5 %. The beer finishes with a good punch of mango nectar, blood grapefruit, fermented orange, grapefruit pulp and a pinch of lemon pith. The hoppy touch is nice and detectable, very fruity indeed. The aftertaste hoards mangoes from the tastebuds and hides them for a pretty long time. The mouthfeel is juicy and even nectar-like, a tad thick, faintly crisp as well as intriguingly tropical. It's also soft and smooth, balanced as well as really quaffable. Surely the beer is also somewhat powerless and flat but not characterless. Probably a good sessionable summer thirst quencher although not particularly refreshing.
