Small Beer: The Genesis, Finland

Backlog from yesterday due to socializing pressures. This beer is a byproduct of our first batch of Sahti that we brewed some ten days ago -- a so called "Small Beer". This was made of the second running of the Sahti wort without any further boost of malt or flavors. Solely a small injection of dried hop cones was added. The variety of the hop is unknown; it's a rustic variety that has been growing uncultivated and more or less wild on the wall of our neighbor's ancient sauna for ages. The beer is visibly turbid, deep copper. The lively carbonation unleashes a cream-colored, velvety head that exceeds one finger. The retention is substantially long and the foam the paints the glass with thick lacings. The scent is slightly odd: I'm getting distinct barley flour and a faint vegetal aroma. Hmmm... The taste offers thin pale malt, distant earthy hops, a suggestion of wort and a bready twist. The gustatory supply is relatively simple. Fortunately the vegetal note doesn't carry over to the tongue. The body is thin but not skinny. The beer finishes with the familiar bready and worty nuances. The aftertaste reminds the tastebuds of the brewing process for some time. The mouthfeel is thin, truly remotely crisp, moderately effervescent and slightly earthy. Overall, quite an interesting end product but I wouldn't rush to a pub to taste this.
