Sweet, fruity… 6% lilt 😀

Lovely and tropical

It seems a year or two ago this brew was referred to as a smoothie IPA, if that were written on the can I probably wouldn't have bought it. Even the 'twist edition' almost stopped me from trying it but it's certainly in my mind that this is likely to be adjunct heavy and possibly a poor brew but I'm taking the risk. Amber and hazy, though not opaque, with some head retention so probably quite carbonated. Sweet mango and pineapple concentrate on the nose with no hops coming through, it smells like a soft drink or fruit cider. First sip...this is quite odd. I can see why they'd call it a smoothie IPA previously, although not creamy it's has a oaty and wheaty finish. Not a fan of this one. It's tangy with a mix of tropical flavours but none of which are consequences of hops. There's a second finish, a much longer aftertaste after the wheat, it's a strong concentrate taste like a cordial without the water added. It's not entirely unpleasant but it's not quality and it's not an expression of fruity hops, it's trickery for the casual. You can make anything fruity this way like a cheap radler, cider or smoothie IPA. Maybe that's a little harsh, as you can tell there was some effort in it just not much. I've had worse beers and to be fair, I drank more beer like this early on in my craft journey because this is what supermarkets often offer and avoiding these is tough to do what you haven't got the keen eye. Northern Monk have alot nicer available beers from supermarkets like Heathen, oh I wish this was a Heathen right now. 😅
