Black Boar 2017 Bourbon Barrel Aged, Ireland
3.8
New beer in Pint Please. Bottle. Bottled on sometimes in 2017 Temperature: +14 C Black color. The foam is about one finger tall, even layer with solid retention. Good, oily texture. Looks good: 4,5/5 Right at the moment, I opened the cap, a beautiful long term aging notes of red berries and Sherry filled the room. Bourbon is mellowed down quite a bit I'm, guessing, but it still somewhat here and fits very well with the aromas caused by the aging. Not much Oatmeal Stout like aromas or any Stout aromas for that mater are here anymore. All of them are just consumed by age, and they've merged together. Still, lovely elegant and strong aroma: 4,25/5 Mouthfeel is medium, velvety soft with Sherry like alcohol feel. Some dark malt presence is still here but only mildly: 4/5 Taste is yet again pretty much all about Sherry like flavor, red berries (with a slightly tart twist) and other aging/oxidation provided notes. The light coffee flavor remains. Bourbon is basically all gone. Only some memories of vanilla tell it was here at some point. Mild oak dryness feels in the aftertaste: 11/15 Despite I really love these age flavors, I can't say this is particularly well-aged beer. There was plenty of headspace in the bottle so no wonder this shows so heavy aging and oxidation flavors and aromas. Almost all of the base beer and barrel-aging flavors are gone (I don't know how this would taste when younger, but there must have been some other flavors). When the beer gets warmer the red berry-like tart flavor starts to dominate the palate. And I don't really care about that very much. Best aged beers IMO should be complex brews with the aging only providing something Extra and complement the beer flavors, not completely dominate the beer, like has happened with this brew: 14,25/20 =38/50
