A little souvenir from Iceland now.
The beer pours murky, dark mahogany. The rich, short-lived carbonation unleashes a cream-colored, velvety head that reaches 1.5 fingers. The foam shrinks soon to a thick lace ring circling the surface. The withdrawing foam leaves a number of milky dots on the glass.
The fragrance puts forward deep-toasted rye bread, burned malt and a small injection of charcoal.
The taste profile is burned and somewhat dry. I find deep-toasted rye bread, a big spoonful of rye flour and a good amount of burned malt. I can also detect a bit of charcoal and tar as well as faint bitter licorice root. Maybe also a coffeeish note is detectable in the background.
The body is light to light-medium. The beer ends with burned malt that portrays itself a tad dry and somewhat bitter. Tar lingers restrainedly on the tongue. I can still find licorice root, tar and rye bread in the finish, as well. The aftertaste keeps the tastebuds dry for a long time.
The mouthfeel is burned and slightly charred. It's also dry and mouth-drying. Christmassy this is not despite the label.
