Narwhal 2018
10.2% Imperial Stout
Narwhal Imperial Stout is inspired by the mysterious creature that thrives in the deepest fathoms of the frigid Arctic Ocean. Featuring incredible depth of malt flavor, rich with notes of espresso, baker’s cocoa, roasted grain and a light hint of smoke, Narwhal is a massive malt-forward monster. Aggressive but refined with a velvety smooth body and decadent finish, Narwhal will age in the bottle for years to come.

Roasted malts and chocolate in the aroma. Taste has roasted malts to start, followed by chocolate notes, finishing with some coffee on the back end. Medium-full body, mouth coating mouthfeel and a lower amount of carbonation. Very well made. I'm collecting a bottle each year to do a vertical tasting at some point in the future. So far I have 2016 through 2019 vintages. Great stout that just doesn't get the love it deserves. 4/5

Bottle. Bottled on: 12.4.2018 Temperature: + 12 degrees As every beer from Sierra Nevada, this also looks very pretty in the glass. Dark brown, almost black in colour. Tan head is creamy, and stylish with very good retention : 4,75/5 Nose is exactly like Russian Imperial stout should be: big time malty, roasty, espresso, hint of sweetness, chocolate and some alcohol at the back. Well aged, beautiful scent of RIS: 4,25/5 Mouthfeel is medium-full, sharp - curtesy of the dark malts and a bit oily, which I don't really like. It takes away some of the fullness and there isn't enough bitterness to balance it. Medium carbonation: 3,75/5 Taste is again very malty, roasty, bit sweet, coffee-like, chocolate and alcohol at the back. Unlike the scent, flavour is much more messy despite sharing same kinds of things: 10/15 Not so well aged than I first thought. Bitterness seems to have faided and the roasty maltiness dilluted and some kind of oilyness has taken over. Decent beer nevertheless: 14,75/20 =37,5/50

Pikimusta olut kaatuu lasiin lähes vaahdotta. Tuoksussa reippaasti paahdettua mallasta. Suutuntuma paksu ja öjyinen. Maussa makeaa mallasta, paahteisuutta, jopa palanutta. Alkoholi lämmittää vatsanpohjalla. Mallasrunko on reipas, kuten olettaa sopii. Hieman alkoholi puskee läpi. Kokonaisuutena hyvä tuhti IS.

Kaatuu lasiin sysimustana, ohuena, aikalailla vaahdotta. Tuoksuu hennon sitruunaiselle, paahteiselle maltaalle ja makealle. Maku on todella paahteinen, kuiva, voimakkaasti humalainen, ohuen sitruunankuorinen, semimakea, hitusen kahvinen ja hiukan myös alkoholinen. Jälkimaku on todella kuiva, hiukan Russian Imperial Stoutin alkoholinen ja kahvinen. Jälkimaku kestää todella kauan, ihan lopuksi suuhun muodostuu sitruunankuorisen vaikea kuivuus.

Maultaan tummempi stout. Tuttua tummaa suklaata löytyi. Raskas, vaikkei suutuntuma ollutkaan tuhti

Aika kiva. Tuoksuu kitkerälle tummalle suklaalle, vähän alkoholille. Vähän kuiva ja katkera välillä. Paahteinen ja lakritsinen. Vähän turhan kitkerä on tuo jälkimaku. Silti aivan menevä stoutti.
