Devil's Rest 7.0%, Burning Sky Brewery, England
4 ratings
Devil's Rest
7.0% India Pale Ale
Deceptively drinkable, with a burnt orange colour and full flavour in the mouth. Huge amounts of Simcoe & Centennial hops find their way into the kettle, with even more sneaking in post fermentation for a 'proper' IPA flavour.

A pale brew, amber in colour and the slightest haze. Looks like a proper/old skool IPA. I've had burning sky several times but cannot remember if I've had this particular beer. I saw it in the shop and grabbed it through lack of available choice. The aroma is quite familiar, like an English IPA of old but with depth. Emitting stone fruit and even a bit of malt. Mixed fruit flavours hit the tongue first followed by warming malt and lastly a bitter finish. Having drunk so many New England's one forgets other forms of IPA and, as I said, this is more traditional in approach. Think old speckled hen but with a chutney like fruit and 7% abv. Less caramel malt than our classic brews but still is a bit of a change to experience malt, again, after all the juicy NEIPAs. Simcoe hops really help this IPA have it's fruit and Columbus hops for the bitter typically used in brown ale, stouts and such. Together they make variety. We know toffee apple..well how about toffee peach and caramelised/candied orange! It's light and thin in the mouth initially but the full body rears its head soon after and stays until and throughout the finish. It is warming via the malt, bitter and high alcohol content. It's not my fave style of IPA and this example of it isn't the very best either. But it's hefty and decent without overwhelming, although you wouldn't want to knock back a few of these, it is good to end the night off like I am doing right now.
