Weihenstephaner Tradition
5.2% Dunkel / Tmavý
Our reddish brown dark lager “Tradition” with its mild aroma of hops smells like roasted malt and impresses with its sweet caramel flavor which is followed by a slight bitterness. Goes well with hearty dishes, such as roasts, poultry and game. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

The Dunkel is one style that escapes me, authentic Dunkels are rarely available here, but today I found one and sure it is still the season after all. Pour was a little uneventful and while I was expecting maybe a ruby red body, I wasn't expecting it be as sincerely 'dunk' as it is. It is a dark brown, almost like bad coffee or good tea, and with a only the slightest hue of ruby red, but only against the light. There was a decent amount of fluffy, brown foam but it wouldn't even stay long enough to get into the picture. Aromas of caramel malt and sweet biscuit at first, pairing well together. This is followed by dried fruits which ads a little tart bite before calming back down from a little molasses that seems to run beneath it. The feeling in the mouth is a medium to light body, with only mild foaminess and milder carbobation. This foaminess dilutes further and leaves the body feeling a little watery, but just escapes this by a mildly syrupy texture that peeks through. Taste is light caramel malt with a nice nutty current running through. Sweet, doughy bread emerges and sort of assimilates the caramel malt before the dried fruit makes another brief, but sharp appearance before simmering down and letting the whole beer pass into a mellow aftertaste with a hint of iron in it. Happy with this, would be thrilled to try more, especially with food.
